"Get ourApp App The homepage Current eater city:San Diego Dining Out in San Diego The Best Mexican Food in San Diego, According to a Local Food Expert Find everything from street tacos and Tijuana-style birria to a chef’s tasting menu by Roxana Becerril Updated Apr 28, 2026, 12:50 PM EDT Roxana Becerril is a Mexican-American journalist based in Southern California. Her work has been published by award-winning national and local publications including The Los Angeles Times, San Diego Magazine, and The San Diego Union-Tribune. San Diego is deeply rooted in serving dishes inspired by its neighbor to the south — the city’s myriad Mexican restaurants showcase specialties from various regions in Mexico. Longtime San Diegans may be familiar with the crossover between American and Mexican cuisines, and have most likely experienced the lip-puckering result of these cultural mashups firsthand. The fish taco, for example, is a dish influenced by Baja California’s array of locally caught fish that gained popularity in California after entrepreneurs like Ralph Rubio of the fish taco chain Rubio’s Coastal Grill brought this style of tacos stateside. Today, this blend of cultures remains true in many of the Mexican spots in San Diego. From low-key spots in Chula Vista up to Michelin-recognized dining destinations in Oceanside, the best Mexican restaurants in San Diego offer casual tacos, tangy ceviches, deeply spiced lamb barbacoa, birria, and more. For more focused lists, check out Eater’s maps for where to eat tacos and fish tacos. This update adds Carlsbad newcomer Nòmada; Las Cuatro Milpas, the legendary Mexican restaurant that will reopen in a different location later this spring or summer, temporarily leaves. Since earning her degree in journalism and advertising from San Diego State University, her work has been published by award-winning national and local publications including The Los Angeles Times, San Diego Magazine, and The San Diego Union-Tribune. She drinks multiple beverages throughout the day and enjoys making them — matcha lattes, green juice, and chai tea are in her current rotation. The waterfront restaurant from chef Roberto Alcocer showcases seasonal dishes that push the gastronomical boundaries of Mexican cuisine. Previous standouts include ike jime rock cod aguachile, a sweetbread taco, and a mango coconut chocolate dessert served with wine pairings from Mexico and around the world. Diners who are in the market for a more elevated and intimate experience may want to consider booking the chef’s table experience ($350) which includes a curated menu and is hosted inside the restaurant’s kitchen every day from Tuesday to Saturday at 6:30 p.m. More Info Four Tunas Fish and Bar 601 North Broadway, Escondido, California 92025 Diners who make the trek up north to this family-run restaurant are rewarded with its tuna specialties. With locations in Oceanside and Escondido, the restaurant’s name is a word play on “fortunas,” which translates to “fortune.” Each family member has a favorite tuna type, like smoked tuna, ahi tuna, and bluefin tuna, which are featured in their tacos, tostadas, and burritos. Wash down your selects with a margarita, one of their michelada variations like the Piñada with pineapple pulp, or homemade jamaica agua fresca spiced with cinnamon. "The only Michelin Bib Gourmand taqueria in the area, Lola 55 stands out for its elevated street tacos. Currently overseen by chef Daniel Soto from the Michelin two-starred restaurant Pujol in Mexico City, the restaurant has another outpost in Carlsbad and a spinoff headed for Westfield UTC. Highlights include the achiote-rubbed pork belly with grilled pineapple, vegan shroom taco with beet soyrizo, and citrus-y cocktails. The beans and rice (abuela’s secret recipe) are musts as well. "

"Try vegan cauliflower taco."

"Bib Gourmand 2024 There may be plenty of taquerias around town, but this East Village gem is of a slightly different breed. The airy space, with its high ceilings, concrete floors and a full bar with lounge, reads über-cool. However, it’s more than just about good looks—their tacos are what draw the crowds. The variations on offer here lean more sophisticated with creative combinations such as baby carrot adobada and squash blossom relleno. Ribeye carne asada cooked to order on the mesquite wood-burning grill or achiote-rubbed pork belly with grilled pineapple are just some of the winners. Posole verde is comfort in a bowl, while fried masa disks are plain delectable. Remember to save room for the Mexican mole-chocolate ice cream and addictively crunchy churros."
