"5* | 57 rooms | From The Swiss Alpine resort of Gstaad is known as the winter destination of choice for the international jet set, and arguably it’s been a little too successful in living up to its reputation — luxury brands are everywhere, and the prevailing vibe is one of extravagant ostentation. Le Grand Bellevue, true to its name, is certainly grand; it’s one of the original Big Four luxury hotels in town, and its century-old exterior is as elegant and finely wrought as ever. But once you’re through its doors, you’ll find a surprise — though unapologetically high-end, Le Grand Bellevue is a luxury hotel of rare tastefulness, and compared to the rest of Gstaad, it’s positively understated. For one thing, it’s smallish, with just 57 rooms and suites — all of which are spacious and comfortable enough, but range widely from the entry-level “chic” rooms to the extravagant suites. The spa lives up to everything you’d want from Gstaad, with everything from high-tech beauty treatments to the theatrical spaces of the Thermal Oasis. The ski facilities are similarly complete, and the hotel offers some over-the-top extras, from limo service in a vintage Bentley to a private cinema screening room. And the food and drink are beyond first-rate; Leonard’s offers international fine dining, Le Petit Chalet serves classic Swiss fondue, and the Sushi Bar is exactly what it sounds like — meanwhile a number of lounges and bars serve everything from afternoon tea to rare wines to classic cocktails on a zinc-topped bar."
