"The Port Isabel Lighthouse State Historic Site is a preserved 19th-century lighthouse in Port Isabel, Texas, overlooking the Laguna Madre near the gateway to South Padre Island. Built in 1852, it is widely recognized as the only lighthouse on the Texas Gulf Coast that is regularly open for public climbing, making it one of the stateâs most distinctive maritime landmarks. History Constructed in 1852 after numerous shipwrecks near Brazos Santiago Pass, the lighthouse guided both commercial and military vessels along the Texas coast. It remained an active navigational aid until 1905, when changes in shipping routes and expanding rail transportation reduced its importance. The property was donated to the State of Texas in 1950 and has since undergone several restoration projects to preserve the tower and interpret its maritime heritage. What to See Visitors can climb the lighthouseâs winding staircase to enjoy panoramic views of Port Isabel, the Laguna Madre, the Queen Isabella Causeway, and South Padre Island. At the base of the tower, the reconstructed Keeperâs Cottage serves as the visitor center and museum, featuring exhibits on lighthouse keepers, local shipwrecks, and the original Fresnel lens technology that once guided ships safely through the pass. Visiting Information The site is located at 421 E Queen Isabella Blvd, Port Isabel, TX 78578. The lighthouse is generally open daily, weather permitting, with extended summer hours; access to the tower may be limited during wet or high-wind conditions for safety. Tickets are available on-site, with the final admission typically sold 30 minutes before closing. "
