"Taiwanese Our Favorite Dishes: Fan Tuan w/ Eggs and Pickles, Soy Milk, Pan-Fried Omelette, Taiwanese Donut When it comes to breakfast, don’t make the mistake of limiting your SGV expeditions to dim sum only. Huge Tree Pastry is a true diner, complete with grumpy old men reading the newspaper and Taiwanese breakfast foods you need in your life. Their pan-fried omelette comes out almost as a crepe, the fan tuan is essentially a Taiwanese breakfast burrito wrapped in rice, and their house-made soy milk will make you realize all the other soy milk you drink during the week is not real. Huge Tree Pastry is a staple spot for Monterey Park, the kind of do-it-all classic that draws legions of fans every week. The restaurant offers a variety of Taiwanese and Chinese dishes, from dumplings to beef rolls, but the specialty of the place is undoubtedly the Taiwanese breakfast dishes. The crullers and soy milk are a classic, as is the sticky purple rice fan tuan, offered with eggs and plenty of pickled vegetables inside. It’s a small but mighty morning meal all wrapped up in one, which is perfect considering the restaurant opens at 7 a.m. daily. 423 N. Atlantic Blvd., Monterey Park. —Farley Elliott Xiao lon bao The Liu family in Monterey Park serves some of the best Taiwanese breakfast in LA. Order a deep-fried cruller and dip it in a bowl of steaming soy milk. Also terrific are the scallion pancakes that come with or without an eggy coating, and the fan tuan rice rolls stuffed with a fried doughnut, pork floss, scrambled eggs, and pickled mustard greens."

"One of Southern California’s gifts is an abundance of Taiwanese breakfast spots. Operating since 2010, Huge Tree Pastry’s pan-fried omelette, hot soy milk, and crullers are only a small sample of what this diner excels at. If the plant-based crowd wants to make the trek, opt for the vegetarian fan tuan. (Fan Tuan)"
