"If you're exploring California's coast along the renowned Highway 1, make sure to stop by Natural Bridges State Beach. On the west side of Santa Cruz along the Monterey Bay, this 65-acre park has iconic wildlife and super easy access. The showcase of the park is its natural rock bridge at the edge of the beach. The park got its name back when there were three bridges in the sandstone and mudstone — hence the plural "bridges." But only the middle arch still stands; its counterparts on either side succumbed to the weathering forces of the waves and the winds. "Even before the pandemic, we’ve always been wary of crowds. Especially when it comes to beaches. The main beach next to the boardwalk is usually swamped, so we like to spend our time at Natural Bridges State Beach instead. What I love about this beach is the arched rock bridge that reminds me of the one in Cabo. We typically pack lunches, find a picnic area and spend a few hours here. The kids like to build sandcastles and go bodyboarding, and my hubby and I like to take turns walking along the cliffs to look at the beachside houses. (And wishing we lived in one!) In the colder months, between October and January, we also come to watch the monarch butterflies. They migrate from even chillier climates, and my kids love to try and get them to land on their fingers (with some success, I should add!). "

"The whole town of Santa Cruz has a special place in my heart. I went to college at UCSC. My best memories are exploring the beaches. This beach in particular also has a hotspot to see Monarch butterfly migrations. - Katers"
