"UNESCO World Heritage The long, narrow strip of land that is Panama joins together North and South America, and separates the Pacific Ocean to the south from the Caribbean Sea and Atlantic Ocean to the north. The unique location and size of the country make it a natural place for an artificial shipping route, and this was made reality on August 15, 1914, when the Panama Canal was officially opened, with the SS Ancon breaking the new waters. There are three sets of locks along the canal: the Miraflores Locks at the most southerly end, the Pedro Miguel Locks that can just be seen from Miraflores, and the Gatun Locks at the Atlantic end. Miraflores has the tallest lock gates of the three to accommodate the extreme tidal range of the Pacific, and is a two-step lock that covers approximately 1 mile (1.6 km). The lock chambers are monumental concrete structures (built some years before the Hoover Dam) and have to deal with enormous pressures of water, as well as being able to withstand sudden impact in the case of a runaway ship. The consequences of a breach in the gates would be catastrophic, leading to a tidal wave flooding downstream; to prevent this, the gates at both ends of the upper chamber were doubled. The building and opening of the Panama Canal and its locks was an extraordinary engineering accomplishment, and marked a momentous historic event that changed the shape of shipping and travel. Ships traveling from New York to San Francisco via the canal, for example, now had a journey of less than half the distance required by the previous route around Cape Horn. The building of the canal came at huge human cost, however, with thousand of workers dying from disease and accidents during the construction. More than 14,000 ships pass through each year."
