"well family. The garden is Kalmthout Arboretum, accessible by a train ride of only 27 minutes from Antwerp and open daily to the public from 10am to 5pm (arboretumkalmthout.be). It has grown to cover more than 30 acres and contain 11,000 types of plant, far more than I can honour here. Six full-time gardeners and 75 volunteers care for it along with resident interns and students, 12 at the last count, for which it is famous. It is a living testimony to the culture of its makers, who were gardeners and book collectors too, and the value of opening a garden to beauty across the world. Beginning in the 1950s, the makers of most of the garden have been members of the De Belder family. When they began, their business lay in diamonds, source of the funds which enabled them to buy and rescue land from commercial building and turn 20 acres of it into this dream of an arboretum. The founders' children live at Hemelrijk nearby, another superb garden which they also open; aptly its name means "kingdom of heaven".
