"Without a doubt, Sydney Harbour Bridge is one of the most iconic and striking bridges in the world, dominating the skyline and providing a ready-made symbol for the city and harbor it straddles. Opened in 1932 as a road, rail and pedestrian link between Sydney city center and the North Shore, it now has another life as a spectacular platform for firewvork displays, celebrating the new millennium, the 2000 Olympics, and every New Year's Day as well as its own seventy fifth birthday on March 18, 2007 The bridge consists of a single span steel arch 1,650 feet (503 m) long and 161 feet (49 m) wide and towering 440 feet (134 m) at its apex, although its height can increase by up to / inches (180 mm) as the steel expands on hot days. The eight lanes of road-two of them formerly tram tracks — two railway tracks, a footpath, and a cycle track are carried on a deck 161 feet (49 m) above the water at mid-span Most of the 39,000 tons of steel needed to build the bridge came from Middlesbrough England, although the entire 1,400 workforce on the bridge were Australian and the project provided much-needed employment when the Great Depression hit the country. The concrete and granite for the two pylons at either end were both sourced locally. The total weight of the bridge is. 52,800 tons and it is held together with 6 million hand driven rivets. After the bridge was opened, cars had to pay an initial tall of six pence toward the construction loan. That loan was eventually paid off in 1988 and the toll is now used for maintenance costs and for the cost of the Sydney Harbour Tunnel. As the bridge is made of steel, it needs regular repainting, requiring 6,593 gallans (30,000 liters) of paint for each coat. The bridge is open to the public although you need a head for heights to walk across the upper arch."
