"Egyptian | seafood restaurant. NYC’s version of La Paradetta BCN. Pick your fish and/other seafood, choose grilled or fried. Salads, rice, dips available as sides. No frills, but fresh + good ratings."

"AbuQir restaurant/market is named after an Egyptian village on a Mediterranean coast. The owner tried to recreate the feel of a seaside village market-to-table service. Only his market is now not in Alexandria but at Hunts Point. There was no menu. The host waved his arm over the fish laid out on the ice indicating — here’s the menu, choose from what’s on the counter in front of you and let us know how to prepare it. We ordered all their eggplant sides. Baba ghanoush was creamy and thick, smoky and garlicky. Grilled eggplant with garlic and vinegar was probably my favorite eggplant dish ever. I can eat it every day. Eggplant tajine with tomatoes and peppers was also excellent. Oily and chewy pita was perfect to pick up the juices. Wish there was more of it. Grilled scallops arrived in olive oil with lemon slices, dusted with spices perfectly charred and juicy. Grilled octopus with lemon, vinegar, and spices was very tender. The medley of grilled shrimp and calamari spiced with garlic, earthy cumin, and lemon were charred on the outside, plump and juicy inside. There were other options to have them prepared — fried, cooked in tajine with vegetables, baked, battered or not. Grilled was what we chose. Our branzino was served whole. The options were to have it fried, grilled, baked stuffed with vegetables and herbs. We went for the traditional Egyptian way — blackened. A whole fish covered in cracked wheat — because the fish is wet the coating sticks — was charred on a griddle until both sides were blackened. Then, the fish was pulled through water spiced with cumin, hot peppers, and lemon juice. This operation made the skin shatteringly crunchy and the flesh steamed. Nothing was burned or overcooked. As we were leaving, I saw these grilled jumbo shrimp float by us — heads, tails, and all — and got a second thought to return."

"Hole in the wall where you choose your seafood and eat off plastic plates…get grilled shrimp, Egyptian whole fish, & babaganoosh"

@cocospagna

"One of Emily Schultz’s best restaurants of 2022 Once everything arrives, it will inevitably be some of the best food you’ve eaten off of plastic plates. The fried shrimp, for example, come perfectly cooked and dusted with spices, and the grilled shrimp are so good that you might become angry. “Why are these even better than the fried ones?,” you might wonder. And when you try the baba ganoush, you will once again become upset. Because it’s that good. Finally, you’ll eat a whole fish, and leave happy"

"This is another great seafood spot in Astoria. The owners are Egyptian. You go and pick out your seafood as if it were a little fish market then tell them how you want it prepared. Very simple but very tasty. I like the Egyptian style in a stone bowl served as a stew."
