"Lysekil ENGASING FJORDSIDE RESORT With a population of around 15,000, grand old Lysekil is one of the largest settlements on the Bohuslän Coast and makes for a good base from which to explore the wider area. Not quite as twee as other seaside resorts, Lysekil makes up for it with many places to stay and eat. The town retains some interesting architecture from its spa days, such as old bathing huts and Curmans villor, the wooden seafront houses. Crooked street Gamla Strandgatan has a too-cute collection of painted wooden abodes. More prominent attractions include the Havets hus, a truly superb aquarium with sea life from Gullmarn, Sweden's only true fjord, which cuts past Lysekil. A whole array of weird, wonderful and surprisingly colourful sealife awaits as you wander through the underwater tunnel - it's a great place to bring budding marine biologists. If you fancy seeing the area's wildlife in its natural surroundings, you can buy a ticket for a seal safari here, too. Across the fjord is Fiskebäckskil, a village of fairy-tale cobbled streets and timber-clad cottages. After wandering the lanes, take a peek into the interior of the church that resembles an upturned boat, with votive ships and impressive ceiling and wall paintings galore. It's linked to Lysekil by hourly ferry. The entire western end of the Stangenäs peninsula on which Lysekil lies is occupied by the Stängehuvud Nature Reserve. Visitors can keep an eye out for wildlife here (mostly birds), in addition to swimming and tanning (weath-er permitting) on the red rock slabs that jut out into the sea."
