"There is a patch on the face of this mountain known as the Fairy Door, which is the entrance to Fairyland itself. Local tradition says it swings open at nightfall and an "unearthly troop" of spirits pours out Those with the gift to hear them say the air fills with a sound like whistling. When it opens by day, the weather is said to hold fine for the next few days. The fairies here have a name: the "gentry," or the "Good People.," and this mountain is theirs. W.B. Yeats, a famous Irish poet, grew up on these stories. He wrote about the door in Mythologies, made the mountain the subject of one of his last great poems ("Under Ben Bulben"), and asked to be buried right at its foot in Drumcliff, just a five-minute drive from where I'm standing."
