"Smögen BUZZING BOHUSLÄN RESORT Located on the coast near Kungshamn, lively Smögen has a slightly different feel to it than other Bohuslän villages. It's famous throughout Sweden as a youthful destination, its boardwalk heaving with bars and plenty of shops scattered around the harbour. Away from the waterfront, steep steps lead up to rows of rickety fisher's houses and into a labyrinth of lovingly restored cottages and pretty summer gar-dens, a joy for aimless wanderers. Beyond the overpriced drinks and self-conscious Swedish drinkers, Smögen is mostly about seafood, and the early morning fish auction is always a flurry of activity. Fishing boats offload their catches of prawns, lobsters and fish at the Smögen harbour, and the spectacle makes it a great time to head to the waterfront. Most of the catch is actually sold online these days. If you don't manage to get up early enough for the auction, the village has plenty of seafood restaurants. If you have your own set of wheels and kids in tow, the amusingly named Nordens Ark, 19km northeast of Smögen, is a home for animals and plants from countries with a similar climate to Sweden's. It also runs breeding programs for critically endangered species, such as the Amur tiger and Amur leopard. A 3km path allows visitors a glimpse of the animals in their spacious enclosures, and guided tours are available daily in high season. The small windswept island of Hällö is great for photographers, but the main attraction here is the lighthouse, where you can even stay the night. Frequent ferries run from Smögen harbour in summer."
