"Berlin Tegel Airport 1975 Kurt-Schumacher-Damm, AS Tegel airport Meinhard van Gerkan, Volkwin Marg, Klaus Nickels Not even 150 feet between the taxi seat and the aeroplane seat - that is a world record. With the decentralised check-in in the hexagonal ring full of automotive infrastructure, the rise of Gerkan, Marg and Partners (see nos. 378, 420, 483), today the most successful architecture office in Germa-ny, began. Back in 1965, when they were still students, they won the competition which was look-ing to solve the shortage of space in Tempelhof (no. 249) by expanding the former airfield of the French military administration from 1948. The prize-winning design provided for a hexagonal "drivein airport" whose principle, multiplied, was to be exemplary for later airports all over the world. After the Berlin transport agreement had shown alternatives to flying, the design became more important at first. The brown clinker floor, the mustard yellow furniture and the red fittings fell victim to the expansion which reacted to the opening of the sky over Berlin. Today, the adjoin-ing buildings show the serial slim-line design more in pure form. In 2006/2007 a further terminal (C) was constructed for an additional 2.5 million passengers and by September 2009 another terminal (C2) was built. After the expansion of Schonefeld, Tegel airport is planned to be closed in 2012 and be replaced by a research and industrial park for renewable energies."
