"Det siste obligatoriske stoppet på ørkenturen var togkirkegården rett utenfor Uyuni by. På slutten av 1800-tallet konstruerte britiske ingeniører toglinjer som ble brukt til å frakte mineraler fra Andesfjellene til Stillehavskysten. I 1940 kollapset imidlertid gruveindustrien og mange tog ble stående. Til slutt har dette området blitt til en skraphaug av togsett og togdeler. The old train cemetery is situated about 2 kilometers south from the center of Uyuni (a small town in southwest Bolivia, near the giant salt lake). The town of Uyuni used to be a very important central exchanging point for freight trains traveling west to the Pacific Ocean navel ports. Most trains were used by the mining companies and were carrying mainly tin and tungsten which were over 70 percent of Bolivia’s exports till the 1940’s (During World War II, Allied forces depended heavily on tin exported from Bolivia). Later on during the 1940’s, the mining industry collapsed in Bolivia, Many trains were deserted to rust in its final, isolated, resting place the Uyuni train cemetery. There were some suggestions to open a museum out of rusty cemetery but funding was never available, nowadays it still attracts tourists and supply great photo ops due to the beautiful blue sky, white desert sand and the contrast of the neglected deteriorating vehicles and machinery."

"Uyuni était autrefois un important noeud ferroviaire et continue à l'être aujourd'hui car il demeure l'unique noeud ferroviaire du pays ! À la sortie de la ville subsiste le cimetière de plusieurs trains du début du siècle. Les antiques locomotives à vapeur et les wagons rouillés trônant au milieu du paysage aride, avec la cordillère en toile de fond, offrent un spectacle unique et inoubliable. Malheureusement, les visites se font principalement en début de circuit du Salar et tous les touristes se retrouvent sur le site au même moment..."
