Le Musée Rubin of Art, situé dans le quartier de Chelsea à Manhattan, est entièrement dédié à l'art de l'Himalaya et de l'Inde. "Right in the heart of Chelsea, there's a hidden temple of tranquility that instantly transports you to another plane. It's inside the Rubin Museum of Art, up on the fourth floor, tucked away in a quiet corner. The tranquil Tibetan Buddhist Shrine Room is an ode to stillness. What they've created here is the kind of private shrine you might find in an affluent Himalayan home. Candles flicker. The faint smell of incense wafts by. You are content to just... be. It's the visual splendor here that is arresting. Some 100 objects are precisely arranged in a colorful, glistening tableau that appeals to all the senses. For sight, an urn-shaped butter lamp offers enlight-enment. It would traditionally burn clarified butter, or ghee, which is also an ingredient in traditional foods. The idea of sound comes alive with metal cymbals played on the fingertips for touch. And for scent, a pair of hammered metal incense vessels feature lion heads and intricately pierced tops. Representing purification, the vessels were often carried in pairs, during processions. All of these objects are framed by a temple-like, painted, wooden cabinet. Gilt-copper Buddha and Bodhisattva statues, the most sacred of Tibetan Buddhist symbols, are set into its carved niches. Placed around the shrine are colorful paintings on fabric to add vibrant detail and so much visual beauty. Standing in this environment, you quickly understand how art and objects are essential to this devotional practice. Let this mindset guide you as you wander through the galleries. The rest of the museum is just as thoughtfully assembled with exhibitions on traditional and contemporary Himalayan art. Grounded by a central, curved staircase, galleries are small and intimate, offering up-close examinations of paintings, textiles, drawings, and everyday objects. Even just a half hour here calms the mind and allows you to step away from the outside world."
