""After working in Syrian-owned restaurants posing as Lebanese, owner Ayman opened this jewel of Syrian cuisine on Brick Lane. Born in the old city of Damascus, he is a very proud ambassador of the city’s food, and in particular its shawarma. Spits of chicken and lamb greet customers at the entrance of Damascus Bite, a small restaurant with blue tiled walls, hanging tapestries, and benches lined with mismatched cushions. This is some of the city’s best shawarma, featuring the right balance of tender meat, crisp exterior and distinctive, thoughtful spicing. The lamb is spiced with clove, nutmeg, cinnamon, black pepper and onion, and served with lemony tahini. The chicken is kept more simple, with just lemon, garlic and cardamom, served with a voluptuous thoum (garlic dip); each can be ordered as a plate or wrap, both of which come with homemade pink turnip pickles. Ayman’s care and attention is similarly applied to fresh salads topped with sumac or pomegranates, crisp falafel, some of the most flavoursome vine leaves available in London and a deliciously caramelised moussaka – one thing still made Lebanese-style – with soft chickpeas melting inside.
