"UNESCO World Heritage Kakadu National Park is in the far north of the Northern Territory, 75 miles (120 km) east of Darwin. It is one of four Australian UNESCO World Heritage sites that are listed for both cultural and natural values. The 7646-square mile (19,804-sq-km) park was added to the UNESCO list in three stages after 1981. It is jointly managed by the director of National Parks and Bininj/Mungguy, the Aboriginal traditional owners, who lease their land to the government. There are at least 5,000 Aboriginal art sites in the park some at least 20,000 years old and of great spiritual significance — with outstanding examples of artwork accessible to visitors. The contemporary Bininj/ Mungguy culture can also be experienced through ranger-guided activities and an increasing number of Bining/Mungguy-owned, culture-based businesses. Kakadu protects six major habitats, from the tidal flats and mangrove forests of the coast, through freshwater floodplains and wetlands, savanna woodlands, and monsoon forest patches, to the stone country of the Arnhem Land plateau and on to the southern hills and ridges. The park also includes the entire catchment of a major tropical river, the South Alligator. A sandstone escarpment from 98 to 960 feet (30 to 300 mi in height extends 124 miles (200 km) through Kakadu, a dramatic boundary between the woodlands and stone country. Gorges and outliers of this escarpment are some of Kakadu's best known natural features. Kakadu is home to a vast range of flora and fauna, with more than 60 mammal species, 289 bird species — more than one-quarter of all Australian bird species — 25 species of frogs, 55 species of freshwater fish, and more than 10,000 species of insects. Kakadu also includes 132 reptile species probably the most ferocious among them being the estuarine crocodile (Crocodylus porosus)"
