"Fikscue began as a home business focused on Texas-style barbecue blended with the flavors and dishes of Indonesia, an underrepresented cuisine in the Bay Area. When it opened as a restaurant in Alameda, the Indonesian barbecue outfit was immediately met with a steady procession of customers. The menu is divided into two parts: smoked meats, sliced to order, and Indonesian dishes that incorporate smoked meats. Be sure to try the brisket rendang ($22), a smoky stew thickened with coconut milk, and the deluxe soto pandang ($22), a clear noodle soup topped with a slice of brisket. As for the barbecue options, opt for the beef back ribs ($25 per pound), a hard-to-find offering that’s tender with a bit of chew. Outdoor communal tables are available, or you can eat at the brewery next door if you purchase a drink."

"When the married couple Reka and Fik Saleh opened their brick storefront, Fikscue, last November, their clientele — devoted since the pandemic-pop-up days — followed swiftly across the Bay, where halal Texas-style barbecue and Indonesian cuisine coalesce. Ms. Saleh deftly weaves together the electric brightness and texture of Indonesia’s underrepresented cuisine with the stalwart comfort of barbecue. The meltingly tender, jiggly brisket and smoked dino ribs alone are worth the nearly two-hour wait to eat here. But Indonesian dishes — like the Sumatran beef noodle soup, batagor, where beef ribs slowly simmer in a pool of lemongrass, makrut lime leaves and galangal, and the balado plate of smoked fried chicken nested under a sauce punched up with fermented heat — round out a menu unlike anything else in the country."
