"Hotel Chelsea may not be filled with famous musicians anymore, but the rock-and-roll vibe remains. Long-term residents who have been grandfathered into their apartments in the building still float around, and most guests—usually drawn by the hotel’s history—have a knowingness to them, whether they’re in their 30s or 60s. The 155 guest rooms and suites have wood floors with the Hotel Chelsea monogram now inlaid; the sun dapples through ivory eyelet fabric on the windows; and the bathrooms are classically done with light and dark grey marble accentuated by bronze details. Animal-print chairs maintain a bit of spunk in the now bright, airy rooms, as do ornate dark wood bedside tables. Massive closets, their interiors a riot of wallpaper, make it even easier to imagine unpacking and sticking around for a while. If you visited the Chelsea back in the day, you’ll recognize the original fireplaces, stained glass windows, and those iconic wrought-iron balconies leaning over West 23rd Street, which have been restored."

Qui si ritrovavano personaggi come Mark Twain, Thomas Wolfe, Dylan Thomas e Arthur Miller; tra le sue mura pare che Jack Kerouac abbia scritto Sulla strada in una sorta di maratona letteraria, e Arthur C. Clarke scrisse 2001: Odissea nello spazio. Dylan Thomas morì di intossicazione alcolica al Chelsea nel 1953, e Nancy Spungen vi morì nel 1978 pugnalata dal fidanzato, Sid Vicious dei Sex Pistols. Fra le tante celebrità che hanno soggiornato qui figurano Joni Mitchell, Patti Smith, Robert Mapplethorpe, Stanley Kubrick, Dennis Hopper, Edith Piaf, Bob Dylan e Leonard Cohen, la cui canzone ‘Chelsea Hotel’ racconta la breve storia d’amore con Janis Joplin (che alloggiò qui anch’essa). Purtroppo, i giorni dell’arte e degli intrighi sono ormai lontani e il destino dell’edificio, dopo il fallimento di un accordo edilizio volto a trasformarlo in un complesso di appartamenti, resta tuttora incerto."
