"Have an outdoor adventure in the Yorkshire Dales National Park YORKSHIRE // Find a perfectly preserved slice of 1950s England in the Yorkshire Dales: picture-postcard villages of honey-coloured stone, with sheep grazing on the green, set against a distinctive landscape of flat-topped hills, stepped skylines and broad valleys patchworked with lush pastures and little stone barns. This countryside has served as a backdrop to British TV period dramas like All Creatures Great and Small and movies such as Calendar Girls and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. Protected as a national park since the 1950s, the Dales are a magnet for outdoor adventurers, offering some of Britain’s best walking, mountain biking, caving and wild swimming. The limestone country in the southern part of the national park displays fine examples of karst scenery, including the natural amphitheatre of Malham Cove (#77 on this list) and the beetling crags of Gordale Scar. You can descend, if you dare, into the depths of Gaping Gill, a 328ft-deep cave shaft (open for a week in May and a week in August), or climb to the top of Whernside (2415ft), the highest summit in the Dales. The main Dales gateways are Skipton and Richmond. Good bases in the park include Settle, Grassington and Hawes."
