"***LIVE FIRE COOKING*** If you only have time for one meal in Colombo, look no further. Derived from the Sinhala word gindara, meaning fire, Gini was brought to life almost accidentally when three brothers, who live for good food with friends and family started a supper club in the leafy tranquil garden of their family home. So popular was the club, which utilised fire cooking to create unique dishes, that it didn’t take long for a fully-fledged restaurant to be born. Since its arrival onto Colombo’s dining scene in August 2023, Gini has been the talk of the town and it’s easy to see why. Romantic, unpretentious, almost like being welcomed into a friend’s garden for dinner, every part of Gini impresses; dishes showcase incredible ingredients like char-grilled prawns atop shimmering pools of Jaffna-inspired curry sauce, plump oysters with herb-infused coconut cream and novel ways of transforming typical Sri Lankan fare; like deep frying the usually soft string hoppers (steamed rice flour noodles) and experimenting with a drier, almost crispy pol sambol (a popular moist blend of grated coconut, chili, lime, and onion). The few countertop stool seats – ideal for solo travellers or first dates – ensure a brilliant insight into the workings of Gini’s outdoor kitchen, while garden seating is plenty, but fills fast. As delightful as the food, the varied selection of unnamed cocktails – each one distinguishable only by a short list of ingredients – is worth trying, don’t miss the blend of local gin, campari, grape, and lemon for a dose of lemon sherbert nostalgia or heady arrack (made from the fermented sap of coconut flowers), mixed with lime and kithul (flowery palm syrup), both are perfection."
