"Generations of locals thought Longyou's ponds were bottomless, but discoveries in 1992 revealed something far more interesting: 36 hand-carved caves. More than 30,000 sq m of manmade grottoes have been discovered so far. Floor to ceiling, each is roughly 30m, and every chamber is decorated with the same repetitive pattern of parallel lines, hand-chiseled in sandstone. Archaeologists' best guess is that the caves date to just before the Qin Dynasty, approximately 200BC, though no written record of their construction or meaning has yet been unearthed. Five chambers have been opened for tourism, allowing visitors to marvel at symbols etched in the stone - fish, birds and animals. Also puzzling is how the caves were constructed with such precision (some walls are barely 50cm thick) and over what period of time. Scientists have estimated that a million cubic metres of stone would have been removed to hollow out the cave system. The pattern of parallel markings throughout would also have required an enormous amount of time. One theory is that the Longyou Caves are an earthly recreation of the cosmos: the distribution of seven of its chambers have been compared to the formation of 'The Plough', part of the Ursa Major constellation. But many years are likely to pass before Longyou's secrets are revealed."

"The Longyou Caves in China's Zhejiang Province are a mysterious series of massive, presicion-carved chambers dating back at least 2,000 years. The caves were discovered by local farmers in 1992, prompting further excavation. In total, the complex consists of at least 24 caves, featuring immense halls with high ceilings, pillars, and distinct chisel marks that decorate the walls. Despite their scale and precision, no historical record mentions their construction, purpose, or builders."
