"IÎ 57 West, designed by BIG-Bjarke Ingels Group for the Durst Organization, introduces a new typology to New York City: the Courtscraper. The 830 000 sq ft highrise combines the density of the American skyscraper with the communal space of the European courtyard, offering 709 residential units with a lush 22 000 sq ft garden at the heart of the building."

"Often dubbed the Tetrahedron, the form of this 142m residential palace shifts from a pyramid to a glass spire depending on the vantage point. Architect Bjarke Ingels said: 'We call it a courtscraper - the lovechild of a Copenhagen courtyard building and a Manhattan skyscraper.' Using cutaways, notably a 2,000 sq m landscaped plaza, Ingels has brought light and views into more than 700 apartments. The entrance is marked by Stephen Glassman's eight- story, serpentine steel-and-metal-tube sculpture Flows Two Ways, inspired by the Native American name for the Hudson river, and the mixed-use site has brought life to a rather sleepy corner of Midtown West better known as Hell's Kitchen. It has become its own micro-neighbourhood of sorts, and has an indoor basketball court, a swimming pool, a gym and a multi-screen cinema, which is open to the public. 625 W 57th Street, www.Via57west.com"
