"UNESCO World Heritage At 2,500m, its maze of traditional houses and its 352 bridges make it the the “Chinese Venice” The Old Town of Lijiang, which is perfectly adapted to the uneven topography of this key commercial and strategic site, has retained a historic townscape of high quality and authenticity. Its architecture is noteworthy for the blending of elements from several cultures that have come together over many centuries. Lijiang also possesses an ancient water-supply system of great complexity and ingenuity that still functions effectively today. The Committee decided to inscribe this site on the basis of cultural criteria (ii), (iv) and (v). Lijiang is an exceptional ancient town set in a dramatic landscape which represents the harmonious fusion of different cultural traditions to produce an urban landscape of outstanding quality."

"Il a fallu plus de 60 ans pour construire cet immense complexe de 100 bùtiments couvrant 6 ha de terrain. Les édifices sont inspirés des différentes architectures Naxi, Bai, Tibétaines et Han. Mais le déclin de la famille Mu a entraßné l'abandon de la résidence, détruite par le tremblement de terre de 1996. Reconstruite aprÚs cette date et ouverte au public en février 1999, l'actuelle maison Mu est sûrement trÚs éloignée de l'oeuvre originale, que le géographe émérite Xu Xiake comparait à la Cité Interdite de Pékin, mais mérite néanmoins une visite."
