"It's the grand, operatic star of the American Wing at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Measuring a staggering 21-feet wide, Washington Crossing the Delaware depicts the surprise Christmas Day attack on Hessian soldiers that changed the course of the American Revolutionary War. Painted by German-American artist Emanuel Leutze in 1851, the nearly-life-sized General George Washington stands tall in the boat, gazing at the distant shore, while soldiers and horses jostle in icy waters. Surprisingly, there are small historical inaccuracies imbedded in the composition that are intriguing to find when you take a closer look. The painting captures the 1776 crossing to Trenton, New Jersey in vivid daylight, but the event actually took place in the dark of night. Those wobbly, shallow boats could not have possibly held the horses and artillery, and they seem to be pointed in the wrong direction. The rippling American flag anchoring the composition had not yet been adopted. Leutze actually painted the work in Düsseldorf, Germany, some 75 years after this famous scene. The artist hoped the painting would inspire European reformers. He grew up in America but later returned to Germany, and it is believed he used the River Rhine as a model for the rough ice chunks in the painting, which are far dif ferent from the flat sheets of ice commonly found on the Delaware River. Yet despite historical inaccuracies, the heroic painting caused a sensation when it was shown in America in 1851. Washington was a cult figure at the time, and this work mythologized him. Examine the extraordinary gilt frame around the painting, itself a work of art. The original frame was lost, but this reproduction was made for the museum in 2011 from an historical photo."
