"THE PLACE Way down in the stiletto heel of Italy's boot, hidden in Salento in the Apulia region, is a somewhat unconventional guesthouse called Il Convento di Santa Maria di Costantinopoli. It is a half-hour drive from the beautiful town of Lecce, down a winding coastal road, in the hamlet of Marittima di Diso. There is not a single signpost indicating where the hotel might be found, and only the two dust-covered vintage cars parked in front hint at the fact that you have indeed reached your destination— because of their British license plates. They are parked opposite an old cemetery, in front of a building that looks like it might have once served as a convent. Apart from that, there is nothing to allude to what lies inside-no signboard, no name, no bell, niente. ACCOMMODATION The corridors and galleries of this former convent overflow with Moroccan carpets, Nigerian wooden carvings, Aboriginal art, Zulu pottery, glass paintings from Madras, manuscripts from Ethiopia for exorcising evil spirits, and 14 tons of books-nearly all of which are first editions. The quality of the pieces on display is extraordinary, and not one of these would be out of place in a museum. You can relax by the pool or in one of the many secluded corners of the garden surrounding Il Convento. Or simply sink into the plush cushions in the pleasantly cool inner courtyard, a peaceful space that serves as a refuge from the (often sweltering) heat and harsh Puglian landscape. There is also a charming rooftop terrace with potted cacti, as well as an herb garden on the ground level where more than 80 varieties of mint grow. Each of the five suites has an individual style; some feature an elegant bath in the room itself, others have balcony doors that open out onto the herb garden. Do not take it for granted that there will be air-conditioning, television, telephone, Wi-Fi, or even a key to your door—there isn't. This is a place where one should expect the unexpected and acquiesce to unconventional luxury."

Les murs imposants de l’ancien couvent, avec leurs couleurs éclatantes et vivantes, abritent désormais tapis berbères, sculptures africaines, masques tribaux, céramiques zouloues. Despite a flurry of press interest in the early days, this remains an unshowy, insider kind of place for those who get that it's a home, not a hotel, and are prepared to enter into the house-party spirit. Still lovingly tended by Athena - one of whose roles, she says, is to help her guests fall in love with Puglia's rough-and-readiness - the nine-room guesthouse acts as an informal gallery for McAlpine's treasure trove of ethnic textiles, tribal art and a vast library stocked with first-edition books. Outside, the inviting pool is surrounded by giant cacti, dwarf palms and other sun-loving exotics. Rates include a generous breakfast of homemade goodies that runs until 1pm as well as wine and soft drinks, help-yourself snacks from the kitchen and laundry service.
