"Linville Gorge Wilderness encompasses almost 12,000 acres of wilderness within Pisgah National Forest, around the wild Linville River, which settles around 1,400 feet below the ridge. Designated as a wilderness area in 1964, it's administered by the United States Forest Service, and is the third-largest wilderness area in the Tarheel State and is one of the only two wilderness gorges in the Southern U.S. Linville Gorge Wilderness is considered the deepest and most rugged gorge in the region, and vertical rock outcroppings line the gorge. The Linville River, the wilderness's centerpiece, cuts through the gorge at the 90-foot Linville Falls, the most beautiful waterfall on the East Coast, before it descends 2,000 feet into Catawba Valley."
