"The seaplane banks over the Broughton Archipelago in British Columbia above forested islands of rock and pines, and glassy inlets trembling with the reflections of mountains. When it comes to a rest - rocking on its pontoons, engines off - the silence is all-pervading. Nine wooden cabins perch on the shoreline. Behind them is the Great Bear Rainforest, twice the size of Belgium. Nimmo Bay Wilderness Resort was founded as a rustic fishing lodge by Deborah and Craig Murray in 1980 and remains, at heart, a family affair, imbued with easy-going Canadian charm. But it has outgrown its humble origins to become one of the most sought-after stays on the Pacific coast. The two-bedroom cabins are all light woods, bright rugs, tall windows and rocking chairs. Superb dinners are bookended by drinks around a log fire while stars crowd the night sky between mountain summits. Nimmo Bay is one of the best bases in the world for heli-fishing, with access to the banks of remote rivers, dark with salmon. There are also canoe trips and glacier hikes; whale watching and bear /iewing; sea safaris and mountaintop heli-picnics; and treks through old-growth forests of giant cedar, spruce and hemlock to lakes on whose shores few humans have trod. The latest addition to the yoga and meditation classes, massage therapies and body scrubs is a floating sauna (pictured), moored in the bay. After arriving by addleboard or canoe, guests can have the deck to themselves, with a plunge into the waters of the sound to alance out the bone-warming heat. Then they can listen to the loon birds calling across the inlet, while giving hanks that there are still places in the world this isolated, this untouched, this pristine. STANLEY STEWART"

"Hauntingly beautiful setting. Half the buildings are float houses moored on the shore of a pristine bay, ringed by deep forest. Note the waterfall cascades in the middle of the resort, supplying power and offering a bracing opportunity after a dip in a freshwater pool straight from the sauna. Whale-watching, hiking, kayaking, helicopter touring... £1,100 pp/n including transfers and guided activities"

"La spécialité de ce petit paradis reculé, la pêche en hélicoptère. On vous dépose sur le lieu de pêche par les airs. Pas très écolo, mais fun. Le resort de luxe est quant à lui composé d'une enfilade de chalets en bois sur pilotis avec vue de rêve sur les îles et les montagnes alentour. Un luxe qui a un prix bien sûr !"
