The Romanesque revival building itself, built in 1890, is an icon of the neighborhood, and once inside, it's pretty much what you'd expect from a cool-yet-sophisticated downtown luxury hotel: muted colors and modern furniture; a wall of coffee table books; and guest rooms that seem outfitted by the ultra-cool furniture showrooms that inhabit the area. "5* | 74 rooms and suites, $695 to $2,750 MODERN CLASSIC Nestled in the heart of Soho, The Mercer has been the epicentre of international luxury since 1997. With six floors in this historic 1890 building, it is the first choice for the creative directors of couture houses from Paris, Milan and London. In the lobby, set up as if for a literary salon, they rub shoulders with rappers and their entourages, the heads of Hollywood studios and stars trying to be incognito, but also the chic ladies who settle in as friends of the house, even if, officially, the lounge is reserved for the hotel clientele. Designed by the late Christian Liaigre in sobre, neutral tones, its decor has stood the test of time. The library offers the very latest art photography tomes, thanks to a partnership with Dashwood bookstore, and the selection of indie magazines at the reception is a gold mine for fashion fans. The Mercer is also endearing for its personalized touches, starting with the bouquets of fresh flowers in each room."
