THE CAVENDISH HOTEL, PEAK DISTRICT Set on the same estate as Chatsworth House - just a jaunt away through sylvan parkland - this coaching inn has had a glow-up thanks to interiors maestra Nicola Harding (Beaverbrook's secret weapon), who worked on it with Laura Burlington, Chatsworth's current chatelaine. The quarry-stone building once served the turnpike between Chesterfield and Buxton, now dusty pink and sage-green corridors form a buffer from the road, and almost all of the 28 bedrooms have bucolic views framed by sash windows. Quiet good taste is the order of the day, with block-printed wallpaper, whipped-cream-coloured ceilings, botanical drawings and emerald-green felt-upholstered doors. Deep corduroy armchairs in coral pink invite guests to sink into them and peruse books on art, gardening or local lore, and pictures from the Devonshire family collection line the walls, including works by American portrait artist Elizabeth Peyton and Turner Prize winner Jeremy Deller. The Gallery Restaurant, meanwhile, filled with estate drawings, gilt-framed etchings and sumptuous landscapes, is the setting for chef Adam Harper's appropriately aristocratic menu of oysters, shellfish bisque and beef Wellington - with many ingredients from the estate's own mush-room emporiums, beehives and kitchen gardens. The Garden Room, opening onto a terrace, has rattan chairs and brick floors, along with a Sunday lunch menu of soups, prawn cocktail, asparagus and roasts.
