"In 1727 Sawai Jai Singh II Jeft his fortress at Amer and founded Jaipur, the fabled pink city of Rajasthan. Seven years later, on a ridge in the rugged Araval Hills, some 4 miles 16 km to the northwest, he built the majestic Tiger or Nahargach Fort. This, together with the forts at Amer and Jaigarh, completed a defensive ring to protect his new city. In fact, the city of Jaipur never faced an attack from either the Mughals or the armies of other Rajput kingdoms, but during the Sepoy Revolt of 1857 the Tiger Fort served as a refuge for Europeans fleeing from the violence perpetrated by mutineers in neighboring states. It was then extended in 1868 before being transformed, in the 1880s, by Sawai Madho Singh into a summer retreat for the roval farmily. Each of the maharaja's nine wives had a two-story apartment decorated with exquisite frescoes and stucco work, built on three sides of a courtyard. The maharaja's personal wing was built on the fourth The style was Indian, with European features. The apartments were arranged so that the maharaia could visit any of his wives without the others knowing. Legend has it that the site was haunted by the spirit of the long dead Prince. Nahar Singh during construction, it would appear each day and destroy whatever had just been built. Prayers were offered, and fortunately the spirit was appeased when it was proposed that the fort be named Nahargarh."

"Nice ancient fort on top of the Jaipur hills. Great rooftop overlooking the city. The small lightning “mirrors” inside are of Belgian glass!"
