"Custer State Park is one of the best stops in the Black Hills of South Dakota, especially if you like scenic drives, wildlife viewing, and easy-to-moderate outdoor exploring. It covers about 71,000 acres and is known for bison, granite spires, lakes, pine forest, and classic Black Hills roads. Best things to do 1. Wildlife Loop Road This is the must-do drive. It’s an 18-mile loop through grasslands and pine hills where you may see bison, pronghorn, deer, elk, coyotes, burros, prairie dogs, eagles, hawks, and other wildlife. Go early morning or late afternoon for the best odds. 2. Needles Highway A dramatic drive through granite spires, narrow tunnels, pine forest, and mountain scenery. It’s about 14 miles and is one of the signature Black Hills drives. 3. Iron Mountain Road This is the famous road between Custer State Park and Mount Rushmore, with tight curves, pigtail bridges, and tunnels that frame views of Mount Rushmore. 4. Sylvan Lake Probably the prettiest lake stop in the park. Great for a walk, photos, kayaking/paddleboarding, or just sitting by the water. It also connects well with Needles Highway. 5. State Game Lodge / Custer State Park Resort lodging You can stay inside the park at lodge rooms or cabins through Custer State Park Resort. The resort operates several historic lodges and cabins spread around the park. My recommended one-day route Start early from Custer or Keystone → drive Needles Highway → stop at Sylvan Lake → continue through the park → drive Wildlife Loop Road → finish with Iron Mountain Road toward Mount Rushmore. That gives you the three big highlights: granite spires, lake scenery, and wildlife. How much time to allow For a relaxed visit, I’d give it one full day. You can technically drive the highlights in half a day, but wildlife stops, photo pullouts, narrow roads, and slow traffic can easily stretch the day. Important wildlife note Do not approach or feed wildlife. South Dakota’s official park guidance says visitors should remain in their vehicle or stay at least 100 yards from bison, elk, and other animals. Best fit for you For a Black Hills road trip, Custer State Park is a top-tier scenic driving destination. I’d prioritize it over spending too much time in downtown Custer or Keystone. Stay either inside the park for scenery, Custer for convenience, or Keystone if you want to pair it with Mount Rushmore."

"Custer County, South Dakota, United States"

"Located in South Dakota's fabled Black Hills region, the state's first and largest state park is most famous for its photogenic herd of 1,500 wild bison that freely roam the land as well as other Wild West creatures like pronghorns, bighorn sheep, and mountain lions. The scenery is everything you think of when you close your eyes and picture the great American West, laid out before you amidst 71,000 acres of vast open vistas and mountain lakes. The place is so cool that even Calvin Coolidge made it his "summer White House," so that has to count for something, right? Amazing Airbnb nearby: Tatanka Cabin"

"Animaux sauvages prairies forêts pics de granit. Ne jamais descendre de la voiture !"

"A free-roaming herd of 1,500 bison is the main attraction at this park in the scenic Black Hills, but there’s plenty more wildlife to be spotted along its 18-mile loop road, including pronghorns, bighorn sheep, and even feral burros. Needles Highway, a popular 14-mile scenic drive through the park, is dotted with needle-shaped rock formations, two tunnels, and sweeping views of evergreen forests and lush meadows. Weekly park license, $20 per vehicle, $10 per motorcycle; gfp.sd.gov/parks/detail/custer-state-park"
