"One of several whitewashed barns, built around a village green, the Food Barn is the flagship of the Noordhoek Farm Village. Light and bright inside, it could be in the middle of Provence, rather than a mile up the road from one of Cape Town’s gnarliest surf breaks. What was the crowd like? Surfers and families drift straight from the beach to al fresco tables, with sand still between their toes. Kids play in the designated play area, freeing up parents to order a glass of wine and settle in for a long, lazy lunch. There are some dogs, too. What should we be drinking? The Food Barn’s house wines offer great value for money. The full list reveals other local estate wines, several of which are also available by the glass. Some are suggested as pairings. If it’s on the menu, try a sauvignon blanc from nearby Cape Point Vineyards. Main event: the food. Give us the lowdown—especially what not to miss. Born and raised in France, chef-patron Franck Dangereux is the chef who originally put La Colombe in Constantia on the map. His food relies on fresh, seasonal produce and classic French techniques. Flavors are bold and earthy, and the portions are hearty—it’s the food of his formative years, growing up in the south of France. Expect rack of lamb, risotto, fish soup, duck à l’orange and, in a flash of Asian inspiration, tempura-style prawns on top of a tian of confit tomato, aubergine and avocado. The bouillabaisse comes with all the trimmings. For dessert, pray that his decadent chocolate sorbet is on the menu. Otherwise, pear feuilleté, banana brulee, or crepes Suzette hit the sweet spot. And how did you find the staff? Friendly and laid back, as you’d expect in a coastal enclave like Noordhoek. What’s the real-real on why we’re coming here? With its country barn-like setting and children’s play area and garden, it’s a no-brainer for families who don’t want to eat in a bland family friendly restaurant. In the same farm village complex, Franck also owns the Foodbarn Deli, where you can sit down to gourmet sandwiches, daily specials—steak frites, pasta, salads—and decadent cakes and sweet treats. The deli has many specialist ingredients—a great go-to for foodies in the area—and a great wine selection, too."

"Tapas à partager, excellente qualité "

"Restaurant de très grande qualité. Le chef français réalise une cuisine créative et très parfumée avec beaucoup d’épices et d’herbes. Réserver à l’avance car malgré la taille du restaurant, c’est bondé ! Le soir, c’est tapas. "

"Gourmet French food from acclaimed chef Franck Dangereux is served at reasonable prices here, compared to the top restaurants in the city centre. Starters such as fish tartare (R95) will get your taste buds humming, and the mains (R180) include fish and vegetarian choices as well as meats such as Karoo lamb rack and seared duck breast. Every dish has a suggested wine pairing, so you may need to organize a taxi to take you home after a lingering lunch. Booking is essential; check out the deli or tapas bar for something more casual."

"The Foodbarn always pops up on Cape Town’s best of lists but somehow quietly so. Maybe because it is in sleepy Noordhoek, set in an understated barn or because it just refuses to be loud and flashy, gawking for publicity. All of that makes it even more charming and the food is a revelation. If you can take something great like an oyster and turn it into something even better when combined on a plate, you are a hero in my books. And the dessert… I am drooling and crying (because I am far away) was one of the best I have ever had. Don’t make the mistake to order only one and share. Do not ever share the dessert here!*"

Pains faits maison, viennoiseries."
