"Great freshwater islands. Rising mysteriously from the emerald waters of Emerald Bay, Fannette Island stands as Lake Tahoe‘s only isle. This tiny granite outcrop bears the romantic ruins of a stone teahouse, built by the eccentric Mrs. Lora Knight in the 1920s. The wealthy landowner would boat her guests across to the island for high tea with spectacular views of the Sierra Nevada mountains. Sounds like she would have fit right in with today’s yachting elite! Today, adventurous kayakers paddle out to explore the ruins and picnic where millionaires once sipped Earl Grey. The island’s rugged beauty changes with each season, from snow-dusted winters to wildflower-covered springs, making it a photographer’s dream in any weather."

"We drove a boat to Emerald Bay, parked near Fannette Island, and swam to the shore (with life vests of course). The short hike to the tea house at the top was doable without shoes. Wish I had a waterproof case to bring my phone for pictures at the top! Emerald Bay is always stunning, I love this spot."
