"UNESCO World Heritage since Batalha Monastery is located in central Portugal, and is built in the Portuguese Gothic style. It took more than 150 years to complete and involved the efforts of several architects. The monastery was started in 1386 by King John I to thank the Virgin Mary for his decisive victory over Castile at the Battle of Aljubarrota (1385). He is buried in the Founder's Chapel (constructed 1426-34) with his wife, Philippa of Lancaster, who had brought with her some English architects who added aspects of the English Perpendicular style. The final structure of the church is narrow at 72 feet (22 m) wide compared with its 106-foot (32-m) height. Stained-glass windows were added in the 1430s, and the monastery was probably the first place for which they were produced in Portugal. The construction of the monastery went on for the reigns of six more Portuguese rulers, until King John Ill, in the early sixteenth century, decided to focus his attention on another monastery in Lisbon. This meant that parts of the monastery, namely the Imperfect Chapels," remained unfinished. Batalha went into decline when it was twice sacked in 1810 and 1811 by the Napoleonic Marshall André Masséna. In 1834 the Dominican monks who had lived in the site for centuries were ousted, and the complex was abandoned and fell into ruin. However, in 1840, King Ferdinand II began restoration work, which was completed in the early twentieth century. Batalha Monastery is an important symbol of Portuguese culture, and perhaps the finest example of Gothic architecture in the country. The monastery was made a national monument in 1907. It is a symbol of the piety of the nation's medieval kings, as well as their sophisticated architectural tastes."

"Ce matin, j'ai visité la plage de São Martinho do Porto. Mais la plage était interdite à cause des Caravelas (petite pieuvre pas très sympa). 🦑🦑🦑 Impatiente, j'ai suivi sur la route vers le Monastère de la Bataille. C'est que tout à l'heure il va y avoir le concert d'ouverture du festival Mon premier festival. C'est trop cool! 🤟🤟🤟 🇵🇹 De manhã fui conhecer a praia de São Martinho do Porto. Só que a praia estava interdita por causa das Caravelas (pequeno polvo pouco simpático). 🦑🦑🦑 Impaciente, segui na estrada para o Mosteiro da Batalha. É que logo vai haver o concerto de abertura do festival O meu primeiro festival. É tão fixe! 🤟🤟🤟 . . . . . . . ."
