"Take one step into Virginia's Grayson Highlands State Park, and it's like entering a fairytale world where more than 100 wild ponies roam free among meadows, mountains, streams, and forests. According to legend, the ponies became full-time residents of the park after they were bred by residents to help work the land, which can be harsh (depending on the season). Visitors can see the ponies at home on the park's 4,500 acres thanks to its more than a dozen trails, and parts of the Appalachian Trail pass through here.
