"Established in 1847, Washington Park is one of SF’s first parks. Before being established this plot of land was a potato and cattle farm owned by Juana Briones. When the grid system was implemented it acted as an unofficial dump next to a cemetery which extended all the way to Powell street until split up for financial district real estate. —-the park housed as many as 600 hundred people in makeshift homes after the 1906 earthquake— it can be seen in pop culture in Dirty Harry as well as in the cover of Richard Brautigan’s boom Trout Fishing in America. — see fireman’s memorial, Benjamin Franklin fountain and St Peter and Paul church. — it’s redesign is a Lawrence Halprin budget design — a beloved park and popular Thai chi location for the Chinese elders in this area.
