"famous gilded age mansion. The Breakers, a titanic project by Richard Morris Hunt Built in under two years, this sprawling mansion was owned by Cornelius Vanderbilt II, grandson of the railway magnate. In 1893, the heir to the richest family in the United States commissioned Richard Morris Hunt, famous for having designed the façade of the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the pedestal of the Statue of Liberty in New York, to build his second home. The mission was simple: to create a residence on the small island of Newport, between Boston and New York, that would rival the greatest of European villas. At the time, the island was a holiday destination for the upper crust of American high society, and the Vanderbilt family, like other East Coast billionaires, wanted to spend their summers there. The scale of the project is a direct reflection of the family’s sheer wealth: a 1,200 m² manor house with 70 rooms spread over five floors, with facades reminiscent of Florentine and Roman Renaissance residences."

"Opened to visit through Newport Mansions 10:00am – 4:00pm It was the rich Vanderbilt family who sponsored this huge Renaissance-style house. The first owner of the premises was director of the New York Central Railroad, Cornelius Vanderbilt II (1843-1899). He was the grandson of Cornelius Vanderbilt (1794-1877), known as the Commodore, a business tycoon who has become one of the richest men in the country, having built his fortune in the worlds of railways and maritime construction. At his death, he bequeathed $5 million to his grandson who, in addition to a family empire, inherited his first name. The Breakers is an edifying testimony to the flamboyant lifestyle led by this extraordinary family, whose modest origins did not prevent the meteoric rise. In total, 70 pieces that testify to the splendour of yesteryear. Among the most remarkable pieces is the huge marble music lounge. You can also admire the magnificent mahogany piano, in the Second Empire style, on which Mrs. Vanderbilt played. Her husband was playing the violin. Also to see the Billiards Room, a magnificent room dedicated to billiards, whose walls were built from marble blocks imported from Italy. Finally, admire the library, whose sumptuous fireplace comes from a castle in Burgundy. You can see a marble bust by Cornelius Vanderbilt II. The Breakers is the most famous and most visited home in Newport. It must be said that its location on the cliff, facing the ocean, is unique."

"At dusk each day, the light show begins outside The Breakers. For the first time, the exterior of this great house and its landscape will be awash in light, including 28 spruce trees covered in holiday lights with shifting colors along the two driveways; three large evergreen trees at the house entrance decorated with lights and ornaments; and illumination of the historic paths, hedges and shrubbery as visitors stroll the grounds. The Children’s Cottage will be outlined in lights and visitors will be able to peek through the windows at Santa’s Workshop inside. Holiday music will fill the air there and at the Welcome Center, and refreshments such as hot chocolate and sweets will be available to purchase. The Breakers will be open seven days a week except for Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Day. On December 24, last tour admission will be at 3 p.m. During Holidays at the Newport Mansions, Saturday, Nov. 21, through Sunday, Jan. 10, 2021, The Breakers will open at 10 a.m., with last interior tour admission at 5 p.m. The house will close at 6 p.m. and the grounds will stay open until 8 p.m. for the holiday lights experience."
