"We have a brochure, looking office pouch. Missouri bar trail, humbug trail and rim trail. The park was sight of largest above ground gold mining during the gold rush. landscape looks almost like Zion NP. Gold seekers come to Sierra Foothills and washed away entire mountains looking for the metal."

"Though the park is located in an otherwise lovely stretch of the Sierra Nevada foothills, the actual park was the site of extensive gold mining operations beginnin⁸g in the 19th Century. Specifically, the Malakoff Diggins site was the location of the state's largest hydraulic mine, a type of mine that uses high-powered jets of water to dislodge minerals from the Earth. The mine at Malakoff Diggins drew from nearby dams to reroute water flow through the gold deposits and carve away large chunks of the ground. The result was a massive, artificial canyon dug deep into the surrounding forest, one that was left to fester once mining operations in the area subsided. In 1965, the state government began the process of rehabilitating the area damaged by mining operations, a lengthy, decades-long process that resulted in the wonderful state park that exists today"

"Hiking trails through Malakoff Diggins State Historic Park — in the Sierra Nevada foothills, roughly a two-hour drive northeast of Sacramento — offer spectacular views of orange and yellow autumn leaves. During the gold rush, the park was the site of California’s largest hydraulic gold mine, which created a man-made canyon where visitors can now see stunning exposed rock strata tinged with rose, ocher and sandy white. There’s also a ghost town in the park with a museum, and several buildings have been restored as a historical exhibit."
