"THE PLACE Along the rugged eastern coast of New Zealand's North Island, hidden away in Hawke's Bay, you will find Cape Kidnappers Lodge. Hawke's Bay, which is famed for its fantastic wines, is just a stone's throw from the art-deco town of Napier. Cape Kidnappers is in fact an enclosed private park covering over 11,000 acres (4,500 hectares) and boasting a spectacular golf course and lodge, both with breathtaking views of cliffs and the ocean. Much of the park remains untouched. There is also a sheep farm with several hundred sheep. The entrance to the park is somewhat hidden, and upon reaching the large gateway, you have to call and register. Only then are you allowed to take the narrow, winding road through the deserted but beautiful scenery before finally reaching the lodge. MUST-DO A well-known golfing magazine ranked Cape Kidnappers among the 50 most beautiful golf courses in the world. Those in the know say it is like playing a round of golf in heaven! The par-71 golf course extends for 21,300 feet (6,510 m), winding through a lush, green landscape, over and between the cliffs. If you don't play already it is worth learning, just to make use of the modern and extremely comfortable clubhouse. ON THE MENU The pre-dinner cocktail hour is a highligh the fire is lit in the intimate lounge, and guests are treated hors d'oeuvres and drinks on the house. As an added extr you can book a private dinner in the Snugâa converted an comfortably furnished siloâor a picnic lunch at a truly seclude spot on Cape Kidnappers territory."

"Condenast / 40-minute drive along the North Islandâs South Pacific coast from the Art Deco town of Napier, this place is a 6,000-acre working farm in a rolling coastal landscape, but also a golf course, a wildlife sanctuary, and one of the most invigorating stays in New Zealand. As you climb a forested hill toward the farmâs lofty timber-and-stone lodge, thereâs a sense of being let in on a beautiful secret (one shared by Benedict Cumberbatch, who spent lockdown at a neighboring house). There are soaring ceilings and agricultural tools in the main building and smart black-and-white photographs of animals in the 22 cottages with fireplaces, but the overall impression is of a crisply modern take on farmhouse style. This is also a sanctuary for the kiwi and ancient tuatara and, as I discovered on an off-road jaunt to the estateâs sea cliffs, a breeding ground for seabirds and seals. There are miles of hiking and mountain-biking trails across the glacial landscapes, and you always have the option to take picnic hampers to the beach. The Farm is one of those places where you meet other ruddy-cheeked guests over abalone-like moon shell clams and local lamb after a dayâs adventures. I sleep better at this hideaway, as the gulls cry and the clouds roll in, than almost anywhere else on the planet. From $1,600. âKendall Hill."
