"ANCIENT BURIAL MOUNDS Some 300 burial mounds dating from the 6th to 12th centuries dot the landscape at the fascinating and impressive Gamla Uppsala, looking like giant ski moguls for mythical ogres. The ancient grave field, 4km north of Uppsala, features Sweden's second-largest barrows (only Anundshög in Västeras is bigger) and is one of the country's most important burial sites. Set aside two hours to fully explore the impressive grave field and accompanying sites. Start your visit off at the Gamla Uppsala Museum, where a small exhibition displays the bounty uncovered in the royal mounds. Head out to the sight itself, where Gamla Uppsala's three biggest mounds -Östhögen (East Mound), Mitthögen (Middle Mound) and Västhögen (West Mound) - immediately seize your attention. Legend has it they contain the pre-Viking kings Aun, Egil and Adils, who appear in Beowulf and Icelandic historian Snorre Sturlason's Ynglingsaga. More recent evidence suggests the occupant of Östhögen (East Mound) was a woman, probably in her 20s or 30s. Though the mounds are fenced off, kids used to go sledding here and Hans Christian Andersen went inside before the excavation entrances were sealed off in the mid-1800s. It's worth strolling the perimeter of the mounds before popping over to the 12th-century Gamla Uppsala kyrka to admire the extraordinary detail of an 11th-century rune stone incorporated into the church's exterior in the 1800s. A well-formed dragon is clearly visible. Afterwards, down a glass of mead at Odinsborg on top of the flat-topped mound Tingshögen - they've been serving the fermented honey elixir since the 1890s."
