"Ballycastle is magical,” says Mari Carmen Aroca Fernández from Murcia. “It has golden sand and incredible sunsets, and if you need to reflect and find peace with yourself, this beach is ideal.” Facing the sea, on the left is the 18th-century harbour, home to Morton’s (the best chippy in Northern Ireland) and the ferry to Rathlin Island, visible from here, where puffins breed on the cliffs and dolphins swim in the waters. To the right a footbridge leads to a pale gold beach, where the low tidal range and a hardly sloping seabed combine to offer the gentlest swimming conditions on the Antrim coast. A mile along the sands to the east, another footbridge leads out onto Pan’s Rock. A few yards further on there’s a notable slab of tilted rock, and if you walk to the seaward end you might notice on the outcrop opposite the carved head of, well, who? Some say it’s the sea god Manannan; others that it’s Deirdre of the Sorrows.
