"“Dallas County Historical Plaza HISTORIC SITE Just 1 block east of Dealey Plaza, where John F. Kennedy was assassinated in 1963, this open plaza lies in the heart of historic downtown Dallas. It’s the site of several attractions, including the John Neely Bryan Cabin, a replica of the one-room log structure built by the city’s founder in 1841. (The original cabin stood on the banks of the Trinity River.) Across Main Street is the John F. Kennedy Memorial, the 1970 work of the architect Philip Johnson, who described this square, spare memorial as a “cenotaph” (empty tomb). Unfortunately, the memorial also feels empty of emotion—not quite the moving testament to a president and event that so affected the American national psyche. Inside the four solemn walls is a granite slab with the words John Fitzgerald Kennedy painted in shimmering gold. Just west of the Kennedy Memorial, across Record Street, is the Old Red Courthouse, built in lavish Romanesque Revival style in 1892 on the site of the city’s original log courthouse. The blue granite and red sandstone building today houses the Dallas Visitor’s Center (www.visitdallas.com; 214/571-1316) and a museum with historical artifacts and exhibits.” "
