Sigiriya Lion Rock - Monument emblématique du Sri Lanka

"UNESCO World Heritage | Walk up takes 45min Sigiriya, or Lion Rock, is a stunning archeological site dominated by the cube-shaped rock at its center The volcanic rock is 1,214 feet (370 m) high, and there is a sheer drop on all its four sides. At the top, its flat surface covers 3 5 acres (1.4 ha) It is believed that Siginya was a Buddhist monastery in the fourth century, and the surrounding complex was a city built by King Kasyapa a century later. The site is separated from the jungle by gardens; which are edged by a mud moat boundary. The top of the rock is home to what remains of a castle built by King Kasyapa as his hilltop stronghold, or perhaps as his pleasure palace, the castle's water cisterns are still visible. After the king's death, the complex reverted to being a monastery once more, but the buildings fell into disuse in the sixteenth century: A terrace cut into one side of the rock face houses what is known as the Mirror Wall measuring 460 feet (140 m) long and 131 feet (40 m) high. It contains twenty frescoes painted on plaster that depict 500 beautiful women with flowers in their hair. There may have been as many as 500 frescoes in the past, but these have disappeared over time. The multicolored murals have inspired hundreds of people across the centuries to write love poems on the wall. Above the terrace is a narrow, wrought-iron. spiral staircase that lies between the front paws of a stone lion. The paws are all that remains of the Lion's Gate, which originally included a lion's head as well. Visitors would have gained access to the castle via the lion's gaping mouth, The staircase enables visitors to dimb to the summit, and enjoy the view extending miles into the distance, across the surrounding flat plains. The staircase is so narrow that there is space for only one foot on each step — take note if you do not enjoy a tricky climb and heights."

"If you ever go to Sri Lanka you have to go here and hike up the rock. There was a palace on the top but is in ruins now, but from what you can see is still beautiful. At the bottom you see all the pools the kings’ wives used to bathe in and on the way up you can see the original paintings of the wives on the rock face. "
