"Top 100 The first time I tasted Delfina’s spaghetti, I realized that the versions I’d previously experienced were meager pantomimes. Here, each pasta skein is the dictionary definition of al dente; the pomodoro sauce is luscious and tangy, with a hint of spice. The dish feels like reconnecting with an old friend. Delfina excels at this art of reintroduction, which has seemed especially apt since the 26-year-old Cal-Italian trailblazer remodeled a few years ago. Inspired by timeless Italian architecture, the reworked dining room is striking; booths are leather-bound and the archway is copper-plated. Signature dishes like the grilled calamari over creamy beans and the marinated anchovies continue to impress. Before the remodel, co-owner Craig Stoll, who has a spaghetti tattoo on his arm, considered shuttering the restaurant, but realized that he wasn’t “ready to stop cooking this kind of food.” Let’s hope he never i Opened in 1998 by Craig and Annie Stoll, Delfina helped establish the Bay Area’s Cal-Italian cuisine and shape the now-bustling dining scene in San Francisco’s Mission District. During the pandemic, the restaurant closed its dining room for an ambitious remodel, which brought an eye-pleasing wood bar and gold-plated accents. The food is still captivating, including old fan favorites like its Platonic ideal of spaghetti ($26), whose noodles have a springy chew. Don’t skip the anchovies; find those salty filets encased in butter curls over toast ($12) or try the anchovies Nostrano ($17), where the little fish are cured in-house and marinated in oil and chile flakes. There are also incredible meat offerings like the Trippa alla Fiorentina ($19) — spiced, roasted tripe — and a hulking beef short rib ($78) drenched in a wine reduction that’s big enough for two."

"This place was so good and the white pizza was amaze. Also all the pastas esp the ravioli. Our table was ready like 30 mins late but then they offered us all sorts of free stuff bc of it and it was overall so yum and not that expensive for all that we got??? "
