"One of my favorite restaurants in the Upper Peninsula has a lot to do with the food, and a little bit do with the history you find in the murals featuring Gnomes in various forms of celebration. They date back to the early 1900s when an artist was commissioned to do the murals for Bosch Brewery in the Keweenaw Peninsula. They ended up in The Ambassador in the late ’40s or early ’50s, and remain a fixture today. You can find the history online or in a poem in the menu. Now, if that’s not cool enough for you, how about a Tostada pizza, great subs, a spectacular view of the Portage Lake Lift Bridge between Houghton and Hancock or a fish bowl? Let’s start with with the yummy Tostada pizza -- homemade crust and tomato sauce, taco meat, cheese, lettuce, tomatoes and taco sauce. Pre-pandemic they were selling more than 20,000 of them a year. It’s made The Ambassador a Top 10 for Michigan’s Best Pizza in 2013. Along with a full menu of pizza and other dinner entrees, the restaurant crew also makes great sub sandwiches on a French bread made from a proprietary recipe. We loved the Submarine Traditional, which features six meats, two cheeses and served hot. Also, make sure to try garlic toast with house made Ranch dressing. It’s addictive. And, The Ambassador is also known for its extensive list of Fishbowl drinks, served in 25 oz. glasses. A must stop while in the U.P."
