"Mapstr Title: Flaming Gorge National Recreation Area — Wyoming & Utah Flaming Gorge is a vast reservoir-and-canyon landscape spanning southwestern Wyoming and northeastern Utah, known for deep blue water, red-rock cliffs, high-desert scenery, boating, fishing, camping, and long scenic drives. The reservoir stretches about 91 miles, with numerous coves, islands, peninsulas, and developed recreation areas. Although much of the most dramatic red-walled canyon scenery lies just across the Utah border, the Wyoming side offers broad reservoir views, colorful badlands, quieter shorelines, and an excellent approach from Rock Springs or Green River. It works best as a road-trip destination rather than a single roadside stop. Best scenic route The main Wyoming approach is the Flaming Gorge–Green River Basin Scenic Byway, using US 191 and WY 530 from the Rock Springs/Green River area toward the reservoir. Travel Wyoming describes the route as roughly 100 miles with at least three hours of driving, passing high desert, unusual rock formations, and mountain scenery. For the full experience, continue south into Utah and form a loop through: Rock Springs → US 191 → Firehole Canyon → Manila → Sheep Creek Geological Loop → Red Canyon → Flaming Gorge Dam → Dutch John The paved highways are suitable for any passenger vehicle. Your Bronco Sport would also be useful for accessing maintained gravel roads, shoreline areas, and remote overlooks, although no off-road driving is required to see the primary attractions. Wyoming-side highlights Firehole Canyon and Firehole Canyon Campground offer some of the Wyoming side’s most distinctive scenery, with bare, sloping hills, spires, mesa-like formations, and easy reservoir access. This is one of the best places to see the contrast between blue water and the dry, rugged landscape. Buckboard Marina is a practical boating, fishing, camping, and lakeside base on the western side of the reservoir. It is a good choice when you want to stay in Wyoming rather than continue farther south. Green River and Rock Springs are the best full-service Wyoming base towns. Both provide hotels, restaurants, fuel, and supplies, while the reservoir itself has fewer services and substantial distances between developed areas. Must-see stops south of the state line The Red Canyon Overlook is the signature Flaming Gorge viewpoint. A short walk leads to a high rim overlooking dark-blue water enclosed by steep red cliffs. This is the classic image most people associate with Flaming Gorge and the most important scenic stop to add. The Sheep Creek Geological Loop is a scenic side road featuring folded rock layers, cliffs, wildlife habitat, and dramatic geology. The Forest Service highlights it as one of the area’s must-see scenic drives. The Flaming Gorge Dam near Dutch John is another worthwhile stop, particularly for anyone interested in engineering or the Green River. The visitor center provides information about the dam and reservoir, although hours and tour availability can vary seasonally. Activities Flaming Gorge is especially popular for boating, kayaking, paddleboarding, swimming, camping, wildlife viewing, and fishing. The reservoir and the Green River below the dam are nationally known fisheries, drawing anglers for lake, brown, and rainbow trout. For an easy scenic walk, choose the trail around Red Canyon Overlook. For something longer, the surrounding national recreation area offers additional shoreline, forest, and canyon-rim trails, though summer heat and elevation should be considered. How much time to allow A quick driving visit from Rock Springs can be done in one long day, but that only provides a sample. A better visit is two nights, allowing one day for the Wyoming shoreline and Firehole Canyon and another for Red Canyon, Sheep Creek, the dam, and Dutch John. Distances are larger than they appear on a map, and stops are spread widely around the reservoir. Build in extra time for viewpoints, wildlife, road construction, and slow scenic driving. Best season The most convenient period is generally late May through September. June offers greener scenery and comfortable temperatures, July and August provide the best boating weather, and September brings cooler days and fewer visitors. Summer afternoons can be hot and windy along exposed sections of the reservoir. Conditions change quickly, and boaters should pay close attention to wind forecasts. Higher roads can remain snowy in spring, while winter brings cold, ice, and reduced services. Current reservoir levels and recreation-facility updates are published by Ashley National Forest and should be checked shortly before a boating or camping trip. Lodging and camping For conventional lodging and restaurants, use Rock Springs, Green River, or Vernal. Manila and Dutch John are closer to the southern scenic highlights but have a smaller selection of accommodations and dining. Campgrounds are scattered around the reservoir, including Firehole Canyon, Buckboard, Stateline Cove, Mustang Ridge, and Red Canyon. Popular summer sites can fill well in advance; Travel Wyoming recommends booking at least a month ahead during peak season. Bottom line Flaming Gorge is worth saving for its enormous scale and variety rather than one individual attraction. The strongest trip combines the Wyoming high-desert shoreline with the red cliffs, Red Canyon Overlook, Sheep Creek Geological Loop, and Flaming Gorge Dam farther south. It is especially well suited to a two- or three-day scenic road trip with optional boating, fishing, or camping. Mapstr Tags: Wyoming Scenic Drive Reservoir Red Rock Canyon Boating Road Trip"

"When the sun sets, the way it reflects off of the red rocks, from the right angle it does look like the valley is aflame. A beautiful place to watch a sunset if there ever was one."
