"Richmond’s Point Isabel Regional Shoreline is a former dumping ground of trash, tires and industrial waste that’s been cleaned up and turned into a fabulous off-leash dog park. But one fascinating (and non-toxic) aspect of Point Isabel’s past remains: Tepco Beach, where instead of sand you’ll find a shoreline littered with colorful shards of pottery. The mostly shattered ceramic pieces — you can sometimes find a whole plate or coffee cup — came from El Cerrito-based TEPCO, which made dinnerware, including for the Navy, from 1930 to 1968, discarding their mistakes on the beach. (You can still find the dishes on eBay.) It’s fun to sift through the shiny pottery, then take a walk around Point Isabel to see all the good boys and girls, or hike over to the Albany Bulb for the outdoor art show, which inspired another Bay Area secret on this list."
