"CDN - Best Lisbon restaurant for: an authentic experience Price range: $ Where? Intendente It’s highly unlikely that you’ll come across English-speaking tourists as you dine here, which, for me, is part of the charm of the place. Café do Paço is something of an institution for locals, somewhat hidden on an unassuming street outside of the hustle and bustle of Baixa or Bairro Alto. You’ll need to ring a doorbell to gain entry, and the speakeasy feel continues when you see the interiors; all plush red booths and vintage pictures hung on the walls. Food is simple and delicious. Start with a very classic Portuguese couvert: bread, butter, and sardine paste, then follow up with some of the most-loved dishes in the country: an eggy, moreish Bacalhau à Brás (a dish made with salt cod, potatoes, and eggs) and a Bitoque (steak topped with a fried egg) served with a creamy sauce. If you have space, the Encharcada (soaked eggs) from Alentejo are a beautiful way to end the meal. Wash everything down with a glass of local wine, or ask your waiter for their recommendation—they’ll be only too happy to help."
