"The Prudential Center opened in 1965 and, at 52 stories, reigned as the city's tallest building until the 60-story John Hancock Tower was completed eleven years later. With the exception of the top two floors, which house an observation deck and a restaurant, the Prudential Tower is used mainly as office space. The Prudential Mall (not be confused with the more highbrow Copley Place mall, attached to the Prudential Mall by a natty skywalk) was opened in the 1990s on the lower floors and houses almost 50 shops, including Saks Fifth Avenue and numerous restaurants and services. The "Pru" is also home to several apartment buildings and is connected to the Hynes Convention Center and the Sheraton Boston Hotel. If you're not in the mood for the maddening crowd, avoid the mall, which is always teeming with tourists, hardcore browsers, and convention attendees. The Prudential Tower gives you two options for catching its spectacular views: Skywalk Observatory and Top of the Hub restaurant. Both offer breathtaking sights of Boston and its suburbs, as well as the harbor, Blue Hill, and way off in the distance Cape Cod. (By default, the Prudential Center became the best place to see Boston from on high after the observatory at the John Hancock Tower closed following September 11.) The Skywalk is open daily from 10 am until 10 pm (8 pm in the winter). Skywalk tickets cost $15 adults, $13 seniors (62+) and students, and $10 children (6th grade and under). As you walk around the Skywalk, focus on the huge windows, which are marked to help you locate some of the more well-known features of the Boston skyline. Top of the Hub offers a somewhat more cost-effective viewing experience, and one that's two floors above the Skywalk, at that. Entrees are pricey, but juice and cocktails from the bar are fairly priced and served with a spectacular view. And if you're acrophobic, a little nip might be exactly what you need to be able to relax and enjoy the view as you peer down at the city or across at the top of the John Hancock Tower with beverage in hand. The restaurant and lounge get busy at night, especially when the jazz band is playing. A semi-casual but "anti-slob" dress code is in effect."
